Get Off the Hamster Wheel – Exercise 1 cont’d

Product or Service

In thinking about a product or service as a potential business think about your life.

Is there a homemade remedy that you and your family use regularly?
Could it be re-purposed for a new product or designed to meet industry standards for consumers?

At home do you have a routine of doing things that you’ve designed to make life easier? From childcare to balancing the check book.

What are somethings you do at work to make you work more efficiently, protect your health, or get along with coworkers and supervisors.

Think about it.

What are other people consciously or unconsciously doing to make their lives better that can be used as a product or service.

How I Got Off The Hamster Wheel – Part 1

My Background.

I am married, speak 4 languages fluently, volunteer for the community and deeply care for my family and friends. Presently I am working for in a call center for an Insurance Benefits company. My work could be very enjoyable but my company has decided not to hire additional employees. Thus  I have an impossible amount of work and no  joy. I take  between 80 and 200 calls a day to enroll ordinary hardworking people in insurance benefits. Very serious business with a small amount of time to explain 10 different plans with many variances (Sorry, I digress). Since I love to work and really care about the quality of my work I became somewhat depressed because I could not meet the unrealistic expectations of my company. So, December 2010 I resolved not to sit behind a desk another year, eating everything I could get my  hands on to maintain sanity, fulfilling someone else’s dream.

I  am very creative and have had many, many, many ideas for a business. January 2011 was the beginning of getting one fantastic idea out of the dream stage and into reality. I created, designed and packaged a Cosmetic product. There is a tremendous amount of work in bringing a product to market. My family and friends have given me an impressive amount of help. I am still working for the Insurance Benefits company but an exit is planned in the near future.

Create a product.

Anyone with a burning desire to change their work situation or circumstances can do it. If you have a 8-5 job it will be extremely difficult but if you get help right from the start maybe you can – Get Off the Hamster Wheel.

Exercise 1

First, think of a product that is needed. Improve an existing product, or create one from scratch. Think deep and in a limited area but created a simple niche product with low cost to manufacture. I am sure that you already have something in mind that you have thought about for some time.

Research libraries, recent articles, and the internet. Find something that people are already using everyday  but its not on the market yet. Don’t give everyone the complete information on your product but let people know what your doing. Ask them if they would buy a product like yours. When you product is ready for distribution ask them to buy it.

My product is in the process of being taken from the kitchen to industry standards.

I’ll keep you posted on each step. And you try exercise 1 . Let me know how it’s going because you will need lots of encouragement to keep going.
